He then went on to make a debut for India in 1995 in the Nehru Cup as a substitute.

He has captained Indian football team for 12 years from 1999 to the AFC Asian Cup in 2011 and played stellar roles in helping the national side win the Nehru Cup (2007, 2009), AFC Challenge Cup (2008), South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Cup in 1997 and 2005 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup.

Owner of 43 individual goals in 109 international appearances, the highest by an Indian footballer, a Padmashri in 2008, Sikkim Samman in 2004, Sikkim State award in 1999, Arjuna award in 1998, and Sikkim Khel Ratna in 2012, he is also the first footballer from the subcontinent to sign a professional contract with a European football club, Bury FC in 1999.
